Dating Game This is a great activity for getting students talking. I have used it successfully with many different levels and age groups and have found that it is very effective at motivating teenagers to talk. It is particularly useful for practising describing appearance, character and interests. Preparation You will need a selection of flashcards of people, a mixture of ages and types. Write whatever they tell you on the board. You should end up with a paragraph profile of the person. Then follow the same procedure above to elicit a description of the person that they would like to meet.

Each month for the next 10 months our experts share best practices for teaching one of our 10 core Social Thinking concepts—which build on each other and foster the development of social competencies. We also share the Social Thinking products our clinicians use to extend the teaching of these concepts with different age groups.
The Group Plan Teachers depend on students figuring out how to read the group plan for a classroom to run effectively; peers depend on peers reading the group plan to hang out, play a game, or engage in project-based learning. Michelle Garcia Winner, the founder of Social Thinking, explores why this concept is essential to social interactions across ages and cultures, how to teach it to students, and what resources can help. The group plan is to be taught after your students understand and are using the first two concepts discussed in the webinars thoughts and feelings and thinking with your eyes.
After watching this webinar on the group plan, infuse your teaching with the concept over the next month to help your students understand it deeply and meaningfully avoid memorization.

However, by repeatedly practising these skills, or refreshing our memory intermittently over time, we can increase the percentage of information remembered. There are of course variables, such as, the relative strength of memory — but as teachers this is something we are only acutely aware of in our everyday practice anyway. It then seems crazy when we compare this stream of research for which there is much to how we teach in schools today. The trend of learning seems to be similar across most subjects and schools — teach a module, test a module, record test result to demonstrate progress , move onto the next module.
This process tends to be repeated minus a few mock exams until Easter prior to the examination period when we all suddenly start revising with gusto.

In tests 2 and 4 the aiming discs will be used, the Instructor carefully noting any faults through the peep. It will be impressed upon the recruit how necessary it is to always obtain a correct alignment of the sights upon the object.
He will, of course, understand that his rifle having only one bullet has not the spreading propensities of a shot gun; but there appears to be in every body of men a few who are decidedly careless in this matter of aiming, and it is these who will require the very careful and constant attention of the Instructor. The first method of teaching the aim should be by means of the Le Gret Aim Teacher. After applying this several times the method will be reversed, the recruit placing Too much or too little fore-sight Le Gret Aim Teacher.

Posted on 27 February by Alexandra Lowe Learning how to paraphrase is a crucial academic writing skill. Take, for instance, the following quotation attributed to Ernest Hemingway: All you do is sit at a typewriter and bleed. And could they do it in fewer words than the original quote? Then I asked them to dictate their paraphrase to a classmate at the board.
The lunch program included informal presentations in a dynamic “speed dating” setting. Attendees had the opportunity to select from eight different “show and tell” demonstrations and, at a designated time interval, moved to another demonstration.
How To – Getting Started Using Active Learning Strategies Start Small Choose a tool that seems comfortable for a single class session, or even just part of a class session, rather than trying to redeisgn an entire course. For example, you might first look for a tool that will help you make your lectures more interactive instead of trying to replace lectures with activities.
Then work your way up to more immersive experiences for your students. Also, feel free to alter ideas to suit your needs; think of instructions as guidelines or suggestions rather than rules. Adjusting tools to fit your own personality, as well as the content, class structure, and student demographics, will increase their potential for success. Plan Ahead Consider logistics like time, space, and materials. Determine how you will frame the activity, what explanations and directions you will offer, and what content students need prior to the activity in order to be successful.

Speed Dating and the Presentation of Self: Download this resource to see full details This article presents an in-class exercise for teaching theories of the presentation of self that is organized around two key concepts, impression management and impression formation. By highlighting the interpretive, interactive aspects of the presentation of self, this exercise is also useful for teaching the major principles of symbolic interactionism. The exercise is a modified form of speed dating in which students are paired together in a rapid succession of brief interactions three to five minutes.
Rather than seeking a date, however, students are participant-observers paying careful attention to how they form impressions of others and manage the impressions others are forming of them. Because of its brief and repeated interactions, speed dating puts students in a good position to observe their interactions with some analytical distance.
With this exercise, students become active learners, which has been evidence that the exercise helps students to develop a basic understanding of presentation-of-self concepts and symbolic interactionism more generally as well as an ability to apply them to their experience.
Think of it as an “e-Harmony” for research. That one resulted in several research partnerships between surgeons and engineers. Carla Pugh , vice chair of education and patient safety in the surgery department, said the drive to improve health care quality explains why surgeons are so interested in the assessment and coaching skills of professional educators.
These questions are critical for surgery. There are millions of surgeries in the United States each year, and surgery and caring for surgical patients accounts for about half of the total U. Caprice Greenberg , who plans to use Google Glass to record and evaluate surgeries.

Speed dating teaching This enabled speed dating teaching to cross reference their new understanding with model responses. Each round has to be long enough for the students to gather some information and short enough to get to each panelist during the activity. I had set up a Google Doc for teachers to post when they would be teaching a unit and would welcome peer observers so that other teachers could sign up to visit.
About Wanda Townsend speed dating teaching The panel discussion is a valuable, time-tested teaching technique used in classrooms of all types to help students understand the experiences of a particular group of people. My previous experiences facilitating successful panel discussions led me to believe that a panel would be a good method to use here.
In an effort to create a panel that represented a diversity of functions and practitioners, I ended up with too many panelists and, consequently, an ineffective exercise. As the instructor and panel moderator, one has to manage speed dating teaching questions from the class as well as rein in the excitement and enthusiasm of the panel participants to impart their wisdom.
A large panel makes that difficult. I asked the class for feedback following the inclusion of two panel discussions. My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this.
