How to hook up motherboard power/jumper connects

SnowDog 21 12 Years Ago Holding in the power button on the tower would work whether it was in Windows or not – although if it didn’t work at all then that would point to a definite problem. The yellow standby light means that – assuming the monitor is OK – it is not receiving a video signal from the computer. Does the monitor display “No Signal” if you disconnect it and turn it off and back on again? The big question is: Did it used to make a beep when you turned it on? Is it doing that now? If you disconnect everything from the machine and let it stand for a few minutes, then plug in just the mains cord and turn it on, what happens? Fine, lights will probably come on so the PSU isn’t dead , but what else happens? Does the HDD light flicker for a minute or two as Windows loads?

Types of Motherboard Connectors by Jason Artman The motherboard is the largest printed circuit board inside a computer case. All of the components in the computer connect in some way to the motherboard, and it serves as a sort of traffic controller for the data sent to and from the computer’s components. A motherboard has connectors for many different types of parts, and the layout of one can be daunting to a person examining the inside of her computer for the first time.

The CPU socket supplies power to the processor and allows data to be sent to and from the processor from the computer’s memory. RAM acts as a high-speed system for temporarily storing the data needed by programs while they are running. When the processor needs instructions, it receives them from the RAM, and when you save a document or file, it goes from the RAM to the hard drive.

Hard Drive Connectors Generally, a motherboard has at least two hard drive connectors. Current motherboards use Serial Advanced Technology Attachment SATA hard drive connectors, which have L-shaped curves to ensure that cables are connected in the correct direction. Floppy Drive Connector Although few modern computers use floppy drives for storage, many motherboards continue to include floppy drive connectors to support legacy devices.

A floppy drive connector has two rows of 17 pins each. Peripheral Connectors Motherboards have connectors for different types of peripherals, usually located on a back plane that remains exposed on the back of the computer case when the tower is closed. The most common peripheral connection is the Universal Serial Bus USB connection, while some motherboards also have connections for audio speakers along with ports for FireWire, serial and parallel devices. Some motherboards have additional “headers,” or banks of pins, that can be used to connect additional peripheral ports on the front of the computer case.

Add-on Card Connectors Many motherboards have connectors for computer add-on cards.

What I appreciated though is how you can actually lift up the screen with a single hand while the laptop sits on a flat surface and how strong those tiny hinges are. Recording the plug location, type, and orientation of each power supply connection helps ensure you correctly install the replacement power supply and connect it to all the system components. Any missed connection could prevent the computer or a component from working.

Make sure you have the computer unplugged from power while removing or moving any hardware Try 1 stick of ram in 1 slot at a time remove all other ram sticks. Move it to the next slot until you have tried that stick in all slots by itself. If you still have no post, try a different stick of ram in each slot by itself. If you have issues with the stick in 1 particular slot a no post for example the slot may be bad.

It is also possible you have a bad stick of ram instead of the slot being bad, in this case the ram stick should cause the same problem all slots. You may have a memory controller issue in which case if you have 4 slots, 2 may not work. With intel it should be 2 slots next to each other channel 1 might be slot 0,1 and channel 2 might be 2,3. Trying with 1 stick at a time in all 4 slots is the best way to test everything.

Connecting POWER SW, HDD LED & POWER LEd to motherboard

It converts a couple of 4 pin peripheral power cables into an 8 pin 12 volt cable. If you use one of these adapters then be sure to plug the 4 pin peripheral connectors into separate cables coming from the power supply. If you plug them both into the same power supply cable then you are drawing all the power of the 8 pin 12 volt connector through a single 18 gauge wire.

You can often get away with that but there’s no reason to do it.

Untangling the wires: Getting to know your power supply

The relative sizes of the four wires shown above and below are to scale–meaning that their relative sizes are accurate, but all four are of course enlarged. Also, the current capacities above are approximate maximums and probably not what would be considered safe or reasonable to use in a responsible design. The other issue of interest to us regarding wires is the color of their insulation.

There are standards established for the colors of various wires, to help avoid confusion by those who work with different components and PCs. While not all manufacturers follow these conventions, most do. If they do not, problems can easily occur when a technician sees a black wire, assumes it is a ground which it usually would be and then finds out the hard way that it is not.

First try docking the PDA at its charging station and then turning it on. If the PDA displays that it is charging but does not turn on, see bad power button below. If nothing happens, refer to bad motherboard below. If charging the battery does not activate your PDA, you likely have a faulty battery.

Refer to “PDA only works when docked” below or the battery repair guide. If the PDA is responsive when docked but does not power up, you might need to follow the button repair guide. The motherboard is most likely the problem if it has been determined that both the battery and power button are operating correctly. Please refer to the motherboard repair guide to replace the motherboard. First, make sure your PDA is fully charged by plugging it in and letting it charge for at least 30 minutes.

Then restart your device. If the problem persists, use the LCD replacement guide. Please use the motherboard repair guide to replace the motherboard. If your PDA’s notification light illuminates but does not vibrate, your vibration motor may need to be replaced.

Oct 16,  · I’m not sure where to hook up the Reset Switch wire and the H.D.D. wire. The Power LED had a label on the motherboard, and I’m assuming that the Reset Switch wire and the H.D.D. wire go right next to it on the available pins, but I’m not sure what pins to use, and the motherboard .

If the ZX comes up with the same issues when you Google it, I’d cut my losses on this one. If the PC is under two years old and you purchased it paying with a higher-end credit card, you may have an extra year of warranty through the credit card company. In my research I have also found that this is a common problem with these units, but unfortunately there isn’t much out there on a ‘solution’ or ‘repair’.

I have found the replacement board for my unit on ebay as well I am assuming that replacing the motherboard is the “fix” to this issue?? That was a great idea on the extra credit card coverage, but unfortunately I am at 2 years and 2 months on my unit Is the integrated video on the motherboard itself or built into the CPU? Where is the integrated video located?

Is there a way to hook up an external video card to one of these “all-in-one” units even if it involves a “Frankenstein” alteration to the unit?

Hooking Up the Case Wiring Posted on November 1, by daleV January 13, For me, the hardest thing to do in building a computer is hooking up the computer case wiring. You are handling very small plugs and pins. Most of the time, you can’t get to the plugs, because other wires and boards are in your way. You might be asking why are you hooking up wires when you don’t even have the power supply in the case yet.

Well, there’s a method to my madness. These wires are difficult to get in place, I like to put them in before any other wires get in the way to make the job a lot easier.

OK, here’s the deal. My buddy was having a heckova time trying to get his computer to work with his new motherboard, so my wife and I said we’d give it a crack. A little bit of background on the rig. We have a stock power supply, cd drive, etc. The only thing I believe is newer is the motherboard. I’ve viewed Intel’s site for some advice, but that hasn’t helped all too much. Just for reference, these are the pages I’ve been looking at The computer’s not turning on at all. When we got it, the motherboard was already hooked up.

Everything looks fine except for two things. We don’t believe the power and the reset switch at the front of the PC is hooked up correct. On the back of the PC there is a seperate “ON” switch. We can tell the board is getting something in regards to power because there is a led light on the physical motherboard that comes on right above where the power supply hooks up to the motherboard. When we turn the switch at the back of the PC on, the led lights, indicating the board is recieving some sort of power.
