I want to install a light in a ceiling to control by a switch that controls a plug. I want the plug to stay hot, and the light to be controlled by the switch. The only source of power to the switch is a white and a black wire. How do I make the plug stay hot and control the ceiling light by the switch using the present source of electric to the plug? This electrical question came from: Phillip, a Homeowner from Frankfort, Kentucky. From what I see thus far it appears to be the answer to my question. Installing a Ceiling Light Controlled by a Wall Switch that Operates an Outlet Using a Switched Outlet for a Light Fixture The wiring for the ceiling light fixture must be routed to the junction box where the neutral wire is located for the connection for the light fixture. The switched wiring that controls the outlet will need to be identified and rewired to control the light fixture.

Issues hooking up new light fixture Hi all, My old fixture which light and fan was taken out and I replaced it with a new one. The wiring for the new fixture for some reason doesn’t indicate positive or negative. It’s the clear coated cabling and wiring is silver, both are identical. Anyway, I hooked up the ground, and the positive and negative wires black and red from the junction box.
Lights didn’t turn on. So I rewired the old fixture and it worked. I did a bit of troubleshooting and basically this is what I came up with.

Some fixtures have a hook built into box adapter. If you’re on a tall enough step ladder, you can set the fixture on the top of the ladder. is it a ceiling fan or just a light fixture? If it is a ceiling fan, every ceiling fan I’ve put in the last couple years (about 4) have had a built in place to hang the ceiling .
I am not close enough to an Ikea to go pick it up myself and I have tried reaching out to Ikea customer services three times but have not gotten a response back for a replacement part. The quality of the lamp is great I am leaving poor reviews for the lack of customer service and because it is hard to fully rate a product that you cannot use without the needed parts.
This light fixture transformed my dining room and completely updated it. The rattan brings warmth to my white room and keeps it looking fresh and current. I deducted a star as the directions didn’t specify how to get the mounting cup flush with the ceiling and it took me hours to figure it out with fruitless internet searching others have the same problem, but no solution posted that I found. I ended up having to trim the cord, and the trick is to move the plastic clip that holds the cord so it’s flush with the rim of the cup.
This will ensure the cup stays flush with no gap between it and the ceiling.
Hiding the Hook: Ceiling Light
Ceiling hook screw in type Difficulty: The first and most important thing you have to do is locate the studs or ceiling joists. Start by taking the flashlight and peeking beside the fixture box. Typically ceiling fixtures are mounted to a stud. But, some may have a brace installed this is the case if the electrical box was installed with the intent of holding the weight of a ceiling fan or other heavy light fixture.
As I watched one of the bulbs in my living room’s antique ceiling fixture flicker on and off yet again, I ticked off a mental checklist of potential repairs. My husband, Todd, and I had already examined the bulb and the light switch for faults, and found none.
How To Swag A Pendant Its a simple pendant, a large round clear glass sphere with a polished chrome canopy, suspended by a thick black cord – evoking a bit of a modern industrial look. Its the globe pendant from West Elm, its super stylish and super inexpensive, what’s not to love? Unfortunately, hundreds of other people love the stylish good looks and low price of this fixture too because the West Elm Toronto store was completely out of stock with the next shipment not expected until mid to late March completely sold out when it did arrive btw.
But I was determined to get my hands on one of these globe pendants, somehow, someway, afterall there were two of them hanging in the showroom and I only needed one. But no matter how much begging and pleading and negotiating I did why do you need two fixtures on display?? With my trade account I did manage to order one of these lights from the states but it was no easy task.
Don’t ever attempt to order things from West Elm online because in Canada you’ll get nowhere online ordering without a US shipping address and a US credit card. No problem, I had a US shipping address I could use so next I arranged for payment thru my trade account. Good news, the fixture was in stock and arrived at my US destination within 2 weeks. I make regular shopping trips to Buffalo so I picked it up the next time I crossed the border,,,,unfortunately due to my crazy schedule I didn’t make it to Buffalo until March but at least I knew the pendant was sitting there, waiting for me to come and get it,,,,so much for my deadline.
Picking up the fixture was an experience in itself, it involved an unmarked warehouse, surrounded by barbed wire and surveillence cameras, hidden amongst a quite residential side street.

Hard-wire is the best fit for interior use, but it also requires long-term commitment. Plug-in allows the pendant to be used in several locations either temporarily or long-term. For plug-in electrification, loosen screws inside of the plug, expose positive and negative wires using wire strippers, wrap wires around screws, then tighten with screwdriver.
Next, with the tub or bucket turned upside down, hold the plug end of the lamp wire in hand, fish the raw end of the lamp wire through the hole and down inside the bucket. Expose positive and negative wires with wire strippers, then wrap wires around screws and tighten in place with a screwdriver.

The best way to do this is by turning off the electricity supplied to the circuit on which you will be working at the junction box also called a fuse box for your home.

Tip by E ScottD on Step 14 18 hours ago Upvote 0 A couple of things, that I can see that would help your project would be to install a ground rod on the generator or the box leading to the generator grounding the circuit. It could preclude instances of getting shocked if touching something energized a hotplate and a device already installed in the home the stove, range hood etc.. Adding a ground rod would help.
Also don’t run any high end appliances while on generator unless you keep a close eye on the fuel level. When the generator runs out of fuel, it dosen’t just stop, it runs down. While it is doing this it will decrease the amount of voltage to the house. Find an old picture tube type TV if ya have to have a TV. Tip by Philbert D 1 day ago Upvote 0 Great write up.
You do not know what is happening ‘upstream’ from you and could introduce power to lines currently being worked on. I have an almost exact setup to yours with a pair of load meters added and, except for the above mentioned step-order change, virtually identical startup procedures. One thing I discovered during my research on this method was the vague definitions and codes regarding portable generator grounding.
Several authoritative sources have said to paraphrase: Technically, in order to be code compliant, it needs to be determined if the neutral and ground are separated at the generator.

When working with electrical connections, normally the black wire is hot, the white is neutral and the bare is ground. If the wires are the same color or other colors, testing is needed. Test the wires by touching one end of the circuit tester to one of the wires connecting to the light and the other end to the ground.

How to Install a Light Fixture With Two Lead Wires Often, homeowners purchase a new interior or exterior light fixture, then pay a handyman or electrician to hook it up because the wires are different colors. Most light fixtures have two electrical wires with colored insulation and a copper ground wire. An enthusiastic homeowner can save the cost of a professional by knowing which wires connect to which.
With this knowledge, you or a family member can do the wiring connections for one or more lights. If the breakers aren’t labeled, ask a family member to turn on the light with the switch as you cycle through the breakers until it goes off. You’ll see white wires at one side of the switch and black wires attached at the other side. One of the black and white wires goes to the light fixture. The other black and white wires are the electrical circuit for the switch.
If the light can be turned on or off from switches at each side of the room, you’ll see a blue wire that connects the electrical circuits for three-way switches. In some cases, it may run through the electrical box where the existing light is installed, but it is only a switch wire and not a wire for the light. These connect to the corresponding black and white electrical wires that run from the switch to the electrical box where the existing fixture is installed.
In addition, there is a bare copper ground wire that connects to a green grounding screw inside the electrical box. While the light only has a black and white electrical wire, some manufacturer’s include an addition wire nut because these are easy to misplace when installing a light.
