North of Folly Lane bridge. A shunter which would at Dallam shed. I have many happy memories of my grandfather and the railway. He was a driver, and as a child of about years old I went down to Dallam shed with him. He also took me to work with him on a number of occasions after he gave up main line driving. He was a lad that rode round the town in the early hours on his bike with a long pole. It has to be said he was glad to see the back of steam. Heaven for a small boy. I used the camera for family photographs but not for “serious” photographs and very few images survive that were taken on this camera. This was replaced a few years later by another camera It also and had an accessory shoe and sync socket allowing use of a flash unit. Needless to say his interest rubbed off on me.

The Auckland landscape is one of subdued rolling hills formed on weathered Mesozoic and Early Miocene sedimentary rocks, with many distinctive small volcanic cones rising abruptly from low hills in the central isthmus area, between the Hauraki Gulf on the east coast and Manukau Harbour in the west. Auckland’s geology consists of basement Mesozoic greywackes overlain by Late Eocene to Early Miocene, and locally Pliocene, mainly marine sediments and volcaniclastics.
Allochthonous Cretaceous and Paleogene rocks are present in the north. Thin, mainly terrestrial, Quaternary sediments cover older rocks in lowland areas and locally interfinger with and are overlain by Quaternary basalts. Geological hazards facing the urban area include slope instability, the threat of renewed eruption within the Auckland Volcanic Field, and the growing recognition of the potential effects of ash deposits from distant volcanic centres central North Island. Less well appreciated are hazards related to seismic activity including ground shaking amplification, fault rupture, and tsunami.
Recent recognition of at least one active fault close to the urban area has changed the perception of seismic risk. Check if you have access through your login credentials or your institution.

It was a spotter’s paradise, and I wish I could have gone there more often, but as the journey involved catching a train from Leeds and changing stations at Manchester, my mother had a morbid fear that her small boy could get lost somewhere along the way. It never dawned on me that she had another, more tangible reason, like ‘Mother Love’, for example, but since she offered no other explanation, her refusal seemed very unfair.
Didn’t she realise how important this was to me? But the answer was an emphatic ‘No, no, no! A few weeks later I met the doyen of young train spotters called Bonzo.
